Project: Royal Oldham Hospital
Sector: Healthcare
Type: Interior design & bespoke joinery

Healthcare interior design contractor, Truline, was appointed by Pennine Care to improve staff wellbeing at the mental health ward at Royal Oldham Hospital by creating a unique bespoke design that the staff fell in love with. Given the area, Truline came up with a hexagon-shaped pod that represented the Manchester Worker Bee. The pod includes a kitchen, dining table, and soft seating, and it sits within an enclosed landscaped area for the staff to enjoy an outdoor space away from patients. The project faced several challenges, including keeping work and tools within the enclosed, limited space area, ensuring all doors and gates were locked behind staff for patient safety, and meeting strict NHS building regulations.

“Victoria, Pennine Care’s NHS Capital Projects Manager, absolutely loved the design and finished result and said, ‘I have loved seeing the renders come to life.’ Our design team attended site for handover and did a walk around with the mental health ward staff. All of the staff loved their new breakaway space both inside and out. The staff spoke about bringing a selection of books in to create their own library in the pod as well as planting a tree in the garden in memory of a member of staff they had lost.”
